CELEBRATION & INSTALLATION FOR
REV. DR. STEVEN C. MABRY

The Service of Installation for our Pastor and Teacher, Steven Mabry, was held on Sunday, September 10, 2006, during our regular time of worship. Installations recognize and affirm the covenant that honors the commitment between congregations and ministers. In accordance with the bylaws of the United Church of Christ, the installation will involve members of the Northern Association and the Southern California-Nevada Conference. It also brought together significant friends, family and partners from Steven's ministries over the years and across the miles. Representatives and ministers of churches in our community were also invited.
It was a joyful celebration within the context of worship and a shared meal. The Rev. Dr. Richard A. Wing, Senior Minister of theFirst Community Church in Columbus, Ohio, and Steven's friend and mentor for more than 32 years, delivered the message.

Other participants in the service included The Rev. Karl Irvine, Retired Minister and President of the Christian Church (DOC) in Northern CA-NV, Steven's sister Gail and her daughter Kristen, and elders from Steven's former congregations. Following the installation, everyone was invited to enjoy a sumptuous, Paso Robles barbeque hosted by Scottie Simpson and his cohorts.

A portion of what Steven shared with our Search Committee bears repeating so we all can better understand this person, especially after he had been our pastor, teacher and friend for eight months prior to his installation:
"We are not alone. For me, a worshipping and serving community is central to living with meaning. Worship has a blessing to give the world. We offer the sacred place, the port in the storm. From cradle to grave we covenant together as we bless marriage, baptize children, celebrate communion, listen to scriptures, mourn together, and sing and pray our way to the future. My role in ministry creates and facilitates that safe place, accepting all who come to God's sanctuary."

This event concluded the process that has meant much to the members of your Search Committee. It's the end of our task and a grand beginning in ministry between pastor and people; we are called to work together in the service of God.
